European Neutron Scattering Association

The European Neutron Scattering Association (ENSA) represents the scientific community in Europe that uses neutron sources to explore the structure and dynamics of materials. It brings together national user groups to coordinate strategy, strengthen collaboration, and advocate for world‑class neutron research. ENSA works to ensure efficient use of existing facilities while supporting long‑term planning for future neutron sources. The association promotes training, innovation, and opportunities for young scientists across a broad range of disciplines. Through its initiatives and partnerships, ENSA helps secure a vibrant and sustainable future for neutron science in Europe.

About Erwin Felix Lewy Bertaut price

The Bertaut Prize is presented to a young scientist (within 8 years of completing their PhD thesis) who has a clear connection to the ECA/ENSA region, in recognition of significant experimental, methodological, or theoretical contributions to the study of matter through crystallographic or neutron scattering techniques.

ECA and ENSA will present the Bertaut Prize in a regular alternating manner, or as determined by the two organizations through mutual agreement.

A selection committee has been established to assess the nominations for the Bertaut Prize. The roles of chair and deputy chair of this committee will be occupied by one member from the Executive Committee of the ECA and one member from the ENSA Executive Board. The chair and deputy chair will then appoint three to five additional members to the committee, who may serve for up to six years for future editions of the Prize. The association responsible for organizing the award ceremony will also hold the chair position of the selection committee for that year. The chairperson of the Selection Committee will issue a call for nominations roughly eight months prior to the awarding of the Bertaut Prize.

Nominations for the prize can be submitted by European scientists either individually or on behalf of a group. Nominators may be (i) an ECA/ENSA Individual Member, (ii) any individual from a national member of ECA/ENSA, or (iii) any Corporate Associate Member (CAM). The nominator must obtain a signed acceptance of the nomination from the nominee.

Nominations should include the rationale for the award, a brief curriculum vitae of the nominee, and a concise list of significant publications. Letters of support from recognized authorities in the field are also accepted.

Nominations for the Bertaut Prize will be handled confidentially, and while they will be acknowledged, no further communication will be provided.

Nominations will close approximately four months before the Bertaut Prize is awarded.

Nominations for the Bertaut Prize will be evaluated.
