European Neutron Scattering Association

European Neutron Scattering Association

The European Neutron Scattering Association (ENSA) represents the scientific community in Europe that uses neutron sources to explore the structure and dynamics of materials. It brings together national user groups to coordinate strategy, strengthen collaboration, and advocate for world‑class neutron research. ENSA works to ensure efficient use of existing facilities while supporting long‑term planning for future neutron sources. The association promotes training, innovation, and opportunities for young scientists across a broad range of disciplines. Through its initiatives and partnerships, ENSA helps secure a vibrant and sustainable future for neutron science in Europe.

Temporary Exclusion of Russian Delegate to the ENSA meetings

The European Neutron Scattering Association (ENSA) represents the scientific neutron user community of Europe. ENSA refrains from commenting on global issues such as the war started by Russia in Ukraine, except on aspects relevant to the ENSA community.

Following Russia’s aggression, European countries have put into place several (economic) sanctions against Russia, some of which impacts scientific collaborations. Among the national delegates to ENSA, there is a Russian delegate and a Russian observer.

In December 2022 ENSA delegates voted on the following question: “Should ENSA temporarily suspend for 6 months the participation of Russian delegates to the ENSA meetings?” with the outcome that ENSA suspended the Russian delegates to participate to the ENSA meetings for 6 months, starting from 15 December 2022. In June and December 2023 new votes were held by the ENSA delegates, which resulted in new 6 month extensions of the suspension. The next vote on this topic will be held June 2024.
